More than just for burns!
Aloe grows surprisingly well in our Aquaponic System. We've grown three different kinds... Aloe Vera, Variegated Aloe Vera and Aloe Arborescence which is used extensively by a Brazilian Priest who uses it to cure everything from insect bites to such deadly diseases as cancer. His recipe can be found online and there is also a book that can be purchased.
Aloe is very simple to grow, but if you want to grow it worry free in an Aquaponic grow bed, just find an area that receives only a little fish water or plant on top of the water line with several inches of gravel on top so that the roots of the aloe can grow where it will. I have it growing in sun and shade and it produces voluptuous leaves with lots of suckers and expansive growth. The only thing that kills it seems to be other plants if allowed to grow over them.

They say that if you want to use aloe for medicinal purposes you should only use ones over 5 years old. I have some that are easily 25 years old and still going strong. Be sure to buy from a reputable source though, because not all aloe is aloe vera or aloe arborescence….there are a few poisonous species.
Grandmother Janie would use an aloe leaf to swab the back of her throat to kill strep.
My husband’s Grandmother Janie was called everything from eccentric, to ahead of her time. I remember growing up hearing stories about her. And during yoga class I was often amazed at her pronounced agility when I was only sixteen years old and she must have been in her eighties. She earned my respect even before I knew I’d later become part of her family!
She must have read about the study done in 1963 that showed Aloe Vera was effective against a broad range of bacteria, viruses, fungi and molds, including Staph infections and certain strains of dysenteric parasites and typhoid. It wasn’t until 1971 that another study conducted proved it was effective at not only Staph but also Strep and Candida Albicans which is currently believed to be involved in some forms of cancer and other debilitating diseases. What was so astounding though was the fact that Aloe Vera virtually eliminated all traces these microorganisms.
Pure Aloe Vera gel and tea-tree oil has been known to cure staph in as little as three days!
Good to know in a world where everyone, including doctors, have gotten so far away from what our Creator created to heal us! God doesn’t create junk! He knows exactly what our bodies need to heal. Why does man keep forgetting? And why keep thinking we can ever create something better than God? God created a cure for everything…we just need to search to find it and we also need to quit destroying everything in our path, calling it progress, because the further we get a head the further behind we get.

So what about Burns?
I was up late painting one night in our barn. We had an old wood stove we used for heat and since it was winter and the barn super well ventilated, having no insulation and gaping wide spaces between the roof and walls, I had it pretty cranked up. As is well known of most artist, we can sometimes be absent in the present, all wrapped up in the painting. This was the case when I was throwing more wood into the stove, heard a distinct sizzle, smelled burning flesh and when I looked down at my arm where it had pressed against the hot metal sides of the stove I saw a three inch long black burn mark. Shaking my head at my stupidity, I secured the fire, turned off the lights and headed into the house where I grabbed an aloe leaf, split it open and laid it onto my burn. After wrapping with plastic wrap and tape I took myself on to bed. I can’t even remember if I washed the burn off. The next morning I took the aloe off and off came the black iky part of the burn. I couldn’t believe it really, it was like the aloe had completely absorbed the burn into itself! My skin healed without incident and there was no scar.
Aloe doesn’t work well for all kinds of burns though. One time I had a grease burn and aloe wasn’t working. I was cutting an onion for dinner one night and said to myself, ‘hummm, I wonder what this onion would feel like on this burn?” So I put it on the burn and secured it in place and continued cooking. It immediately cooled down the burn and began healing it. Later, when other people would have a burn that would become infected I would use onion on it and it would heal without any need for other antibiotics. Funny what you learn while cooking onions.
Recently a friend of ours received second degree burns while burning a heap of rubbish outside. He called me after several days and asked if I might be able to help. When he showed me his arm and legs I was astonished he was walking around looking as cool as he did. He’d been using honey and spraying colloidal silver on it, but his leg was about three times the size of the other leg which was also burned. I was really out of my realm but again I used common sense about what I had on hand. I used a poultice to draw out the swelling and then called a local doctor for support. I asked her what she would do if he was to come in and she told me and also what to look for as the skin began to heal. I had began to worry that the skin was turning grey.
She said, "Now when it begins to turn grey that's a good sign. It means it's starting to heal.
Whew! What a relief!
For this type of burn, and since it had already been several days, I didn’t want to use aloe as I was afraid it might cause the burn to go deeper. We used a poultice, colloidal silver and honey mostly. After the swelling went down we used aloe. A week later he looked like he had a sunburn and after a few months you could not tell he had ever been burned.
As I get older I can’t remember everything as clearly as when I was younger. That’s one of the reason’s I’m writing…to keep my memories alive, so that others might be able to benefit from them one day. Perhaps it will teach our young ones (as well as old) what our Creator has created for our benefit.

How To Make Your Own Aloe Juice
For home uses, the rind is only good for composting. The yellow sap (also called "aloin" or latex) should be avoided whenever possible. It's used as an ingredient in laxatives, and can cause diarrhea and liver problems if taken internally. The mucilage and gel are the most important parts of the plant for home medicinal use.
The Process
Begin by selecting a large, healthy outer leaf that's close to the ground. These are the oldest and most potent. (If none of the leaves are close to the ground, the plant may be too immature to harvest.) Cut close to the base of the plant at a slight angle.
Stand your leaf upright in a slightly tilted container for roughly 10 minutes. This allows much of the sap to drain out. You may not see the sap in smaller leaves.
Lay the leaf down flat on a cutting board. Carefully use a sharp knife to cut off the leaf's tip and its serrated edges all the way down both sides. Slice the inside of the leaf lengthwise so that the front and back can be separated.
Use a spoon or (for larger leaves) a butter knife to scoop out the mucilage (the slimy stuff) and the gel (the clear, solid "fillet"). Press down firmly, but lightly. Too much force may scrape out sap, which you want to avoid.
Uses
To make your own fresh aloe juice, simply add the gel of one leaf and 1 cup of water to a blender and blend until smooth. Strain. Store juice in refrigerator and use within 3-4 days. For future use the juice can be frozen in ice cube trays and used in smoothies or on skin.

Whereas, having aloe juice for two weeks can help reduce inflammation in the body like rheumatism, inflammation of ears and eyes and arthritis. Aloe juice contains anti-inflammatory plant sterols that help to reduce the pain and stiffness to a great extent. The plant sterols function like the steroid painkillers, without causing any harm to body. However, drug steroids inhibit “healing” or tissue regeneration- which conversely Aloe vera promotes. The natural sterols having the strongest anti inflammatory effect in Aloe vera are- lupeol, beta sitosterol, and campesterol.
For Muscle and Joint Pains
Applying the gel externally can ease muscle and joint pains. But do not forget to use freshly prepared gel. Bradykinin is part of the body’s complex mechanism that causes painful inflammation. Aloe Vera is useful for all hair types, especially for dry and damaged hair. Regular use of Aloe Vera in your hair packs make your tresses smooth, soft and damage-free.
